France's former first lady Valerie Trierweiler. French President Francois Hollande's dumped ex, Valerie Trierweiler, is to sue Closer magazine after the French glossy published pictures of her getting over her break-up on a tropical beach. The former first lady announced the move in a statement to AFP. The pictures of Trierweiler, 48, and two girlfriends relaxing in bikinis on the island of Mauritius hit newstands on Friday, four weeks after Closer revealed Hollande's affair with an actress, Julie Gayet. Trierweiler's companions on the trip, journalist Valerie de Senneville and actress Saida Jawad, are also suing Closer under France's privacy law, with the latter also bringing a case related to image rights. During her trip to India, Trierweiler told journalists she had not ruled out writing a book about her time with Hollande.
Valérie Trierweiler wins damages over bikini photos but is criticised for 'lack of discretion'
Francois Hollande's ex Valerie Trierweiler sues over end-of-affair bikini beach snaps
French first lady gets small payout for bikini pics 07 September - French commentators described Trierweiler's legal action as hypocritical given that she declined to attack her own employer, saying she felt "ill at ease" doing so. Her lawyer's argument was that Paris Match published the pictures inside the magazine, not on the front. The ruling at the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris will fuel criticism from sections of the French press that it is inappropriate for Trierweiler to keep her position as a columnist. The judge ruled that it was neither "necessary for legitimate public information" nor "harmless", as Trierweiler had never posed in a bikini before. She drew the line at shorts.
French magazines fined over Valerie Trierweiler photos
French politics takes popular plunge By Hugh Schofield Paris Segolene Royal, the photogenic Socialist who could become France's new president next year, has said she is not going to sue two magazines that published photographs of her and her family taken secretly on a beach. Ms Royal had an image makeover before launching her election bid According to a spokesman, Ms Royal "does not want to give the photographs more importance than they deserve", though she does regard them as a breach of her personal privacy that could be actionable in law. They show her in a turquoise bikini, walking along a beach, swimming and sunbathing on a rubber dinghy. Hollande and the couple's elder daughter - they have four children - are also shown. Though on one level they are perfectly inoffensive, the photographs have raised hackles in France because they seem to confirm what many see as the growing trivialisation of national politics.

The photos were taken when Ms Trierweiler and her partner President Francois Hollande were on holiday. However, the judge also said Ms Trierweiler must have been aware of the risk of being photographed. Judge Anne-Marie Sauteraud noted that Ms Trierweiler had been bathing in a bikini on the beach of the official presidential retreat of Fort de Bregancon in Provence. No consent Ms Trierweiler had not always shown discretion about her private life, Judge Sauteraud added, recalling a tweet that she sent during elections earlier this year in support of a rival of Segolene Royal, Mr Hollande's ex-wife.
